Recording

The recording process involves using 16 simultaneous, high quality tracks which are recorded into PRO TOOLS with the use of high quality microphones.  The recording process is adapted to your specific situation, so anything is possible.

When recording bands each instrument is mic'ed up individually just like in the studio and vocals are usually taken direct into our preamps then routed into the PA system. Then each track is recorded separately into the Powerbook giving me the capabilities to mix and master the tracks in my home studio or bring my studio to the band.  This method ensures proper levels of each instrument, making for a great sounding CD.  It also gives the option to add any effects, to any of the tracks, after the show. (such as EQ, compression, reverb, delay, or anything the band might request).  It is also possible to overdub vocals, guitars, drums or anything you want into the mix after the show.

If the show is at a bigger venue where a house PA system is used, that is fine too.  Usually we can do 16 direct tracks off the sound board.

For bigger places and outdoor shows we have 100ft 16x4 snake.

Mixing

The Mix down is the art of leveling,  equalizing, and effecting all the various sources from many tracks down to a stereo mix.  During the mix down it is recommended that some of the band sit in to have creative control over their music.  If no band member wants to be present for any of the mix down that is ok too.

Since we have experience recording live, you can be assured we will  preserve the "live feel" of your band, giving you a crisp and clean recording of your show.  There is also the option of us mixing a few songs from the show and giving it to the band for pre-mastering approval.  If the band is satisfied with the mix then we will continue on that path.  If the band wants things to be changed, such as levels, we will go back and change them.  The sound can be completly up to you.

For clients outside the New Paltz area there are a couple of options.  One option is the trial and error method as stated as above. The other option is for ALR to bring the studio to your home and do the mixing there.  This is not a problem because the studio is portable, but the client does need to pay for travel expenses.

Mastering

Mastering is the process of taking the stereo mix and putting it in the final album-ready form.  After making sure the band is pleased with the final mixdown, some or all of the songs can be mastered using Sound Forge or T-racks.  Fades, EQ, final compression, limiting, accurate volume levels of each song, and other small details are done to your music to ensure the best possible sounding CD.
